I installed a creative sound blaster live 5.1 sound card,
rebooted and installed the drivers, rebooted again and
received the blue screen w/following error:

STOP: C0000218 {Registry file failure}
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable.

Begining dump of physical memory.
Physical memeory dump complete.

I have an emachine T1801, western digital 40 gig hd,
800mhz celeron processor, cn810 motherboard, 192MB RAM

The worst part, I have no backup. There are a few very
important files I really need including some music, photos
and document files. Is there any possible way to recover
the data I need? I am so behind because of this so I
would be willing to try the last ditch effort first just
to be able to get what I need and reformat drive and start
all over. PLEASE HELP

Hi RaeLynn,

This error occurs if a necessary registry hive file
cannot be loaded; the file is corrupt or is missing.
In rare instances, this error can be caused by a driver
that has corrupted the registry image in memory, or by a
memory error in this region.

As you do not have a ERD or backup available, you may
want to want try resolving this issue by using the
following steps:

Step 1) Start the computer by using the Windows 2000 CD-
ROM.
Step 2) When you see the "Welcome to Setup" message,
press "C" to run the Recovery Console tool
Step 3) After you log on to the Recovery Console tool,
renamed C:\winnt\system32\config\software to
software.old.
Step 4) Copy C:\winnt\repair\software to c:\winnt\system32
\config\software
Step 5) Reboot the machine

- Upon completing the above steps, you should be able to
boot up the machine successfully. But you may encounter
into other problems because you are using the old(out-
dated) software hive.
You may want to recover your most up-to-date software
hive by continue with the following:

Step 6) Load software.old onto a XP machine, to remove
corruption by performing the following steps:
a. Goto Start | Run, type regedit
b. Highlight Hkey_Local_Machine
c. Goto File | Load Hive, and browse to software.old and
give it a key name of test.
d. After it removed corruption and loaded we unloaded the
hive using File - Unload Hive.

Step 7) Copied the fixed hive back to the machine as
software.fix.
Step 8) Booted to Recovery Console and renamed
software.fix to software in the winnt\system32\config
folder.

Annie,
I got into the c drive but I cannot find any of my photo
files. When I go into a program such as adobe photoshop
and migrate to where my photos are and try to open the
file I get the open with dialog box. I try every program
I can and it wonte open the properties lists it as an
unknow file type. I also do not have access to my cd-rw
drive in order to copy files onto cd's. I also cannot
install any programs because my installer is missing or
corrupt.
Help! Thank you. RaeLynn

Annie,

I need help with step 6 after highlighting the
hkey_local_machine I do not know where to go from there to
find "file | load hive, etc. Also, I cannot back-up any
of my data onto a cd only tapes or to another file. I
created a dual boot with w2k on drive e, but I cannot
directly log into drive e (password errors), but I was
able to copy some files and music from drive c to e.
should I do a back-up to a file and then move it to drive
e? My plan is to get all my data to e then reformat c and
do a clean install and move the data back to c. What do
you think? 2 more things, I cannot locate any of my photo
files. The files that should be my photo files are labled
as unknown file types and will not open with any
programs. I cannot load any programs via cd, I get a "the
windows installer service could not be
accessed......Windows installer is not correctly installed.
Thank you so much for your help
Much appreciation,
RaeLynn
