My Windows XP Home Edition froze up yesterday and now when
I reboot, I get a blue screen showing the above stop
message and I am unable to access safe mode as well. It
makes suggestions about disabling virus protection and
backup utilities, but I don't know how to do this without
windows. In fact, the only way I can get a prompt is with
a windows 98 startup disk. Please help!

I had this same stop error happen to me about 4 weeks ago - right before my
system HDD stopped working. Definately backup your system asap if you get
this message. I was able to recover most of the info by running chkdsk /f
from the system recovery console on all my hdds, then copying the info off
the bad hdd to another hdd in my system. The following is how I did it.

This is how to run the recovery console according to microsoft:
1.. Start your computer by using the Windows CD-ROM.
2.. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the installation,
and then press C to start Recovery Console.
3.. Select the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then
press ENTER.
4.. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.

Note Recovery Console uses the Administrator password that you configured
when you installed Windows Server 2003. Changes that you make to the
Administrator password after you install Windows Server 2003 do not apply to
Recovery Console.
If you continue to get this stop error after running chkdsk /f on the
drive(s) and need to get the information off the drive read the following
(assuming you have the technical know-how to take apart your pc)- otherwise
skip it or go find a professional that will do this for you.

After running chkdisk /f on your drive(s), try to boot your system. If
you can boot, back it up (use an imaging program i.e. Norton Ghost) to
make a copy of the bad hdd - assuming you only have one hdd go to
the store, buy a new one, and then put the image on the new drive. If it
still does not boot, you will need to purchase one hdd. Pull the old
drive out and install WinXP on the new drive. Once that is finished put
the old hdd back in as the slave and boot from the new hdd. You should be
able to get at the info on the old drive if and only if the hardware
itself is still working. If not....there are a few specialty places
that do hdd data recovery but they are expensive.

If you do not need any info off of the old drive, go buy a new one,
disconnect the old drive, install winxp to the new drive and you are set.
If you continue to get this message even after all this......well, lets just
hope that the pc still has a warranty on it.
