Go Tools>Options> scroll down to "Choose If Windows Defender Should Notify
You about.
Check BOTH options, Click SAVE and there ya go.. Worked for me and it was
making 5 to 10 checkpoints every day!! If these options are NOT checked off
we are back to many checkpoints every day!!

This sounds like great news. But do you get a flood of spurious
notifications, instead?

I've long since made the change in my registry that stopped Windows
Defender from making its extra checkpoints (so I can no longer try out
your suggestion), but I also see that neither one of those "Notify"
options are currently checked in my WS. If they are, indeed, normally
checked by default, I would be very interested to hear about the
experience of others in unchecking them and whether or not doing so
eliminated this bothersome problem for them, too.

No all you get is the Win Defender Icon on bottom right, when u click on it
is wants to know if you allow the change... I haven't seen very many of
these--in any case not as many as the checkpoints that were created.

that fix did not work for me, it is still making more than 2 checkpoints a
day on all 3 computers I have it on. I still have realtime protection
turned off till this is fixed.

Just wanted to say a belated thanks for this tip - it seems so far to be a
solution for me (though it raises another stack of questions which I've
explained in a new thread).
