How can make a computers NAME (only) appear when browsing "My Network
Places" instead of the Comment followed by the name in parenthesis?

(And by the way, why would anyone ever want the default to be the way it
is?)

Thanks!

Open My Network Places and navigate until you see the computer icons, then
click on View. If Details is selected, click on it to deselect it.

Thanks but, I think you misunderstood.

It's NOT that I want to get rid of the "Comments" COLUMN.

I want, in the NAME column, for ONLY the computer NAME to appear.

Currently in the "Name" column, the comment appears FIRST, followed by the
computer name in parenthesis. Then in the "Comment" column, the comment
appears again.

If no comment is entered in the originating computer's properties (Computer
Name tab - Computer Description field.) then when anyone browses the
network, the only the computer name will appear.

But if something IS entered in that Computer Description field, it will
appear in the Name column (or as the name of an icon) followed by the
computer name in parenthesis. Then it will appear again in the Comment
column.

I want only the computer name to appear in the Name column and the "Computer
Description" to appear only in the Comment column.

This must be a common complaint. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Because the description is more meaningful than the name. On many of our
machines the Name is the same as the serial number which doesn't mean much.
This is intensional so that an intruder looking at machine names with some
kind of commandline tool will not know what they are looking at.

That really is interesting. And I can see the sense in it.
But I still would prefer the computer names to appear instead of the
descriptions. Does anyone know how I can make that happen?
Thanks!

The best way is to delete the content in the Computer description field. If
you're going to have a Computer description field, as Phillip say, its only
logical that Windows should use it. If you delete its contents, Network
Neighborhood will use Computer name instead.
