I'm having a problem with this stop code error message.
When I research Microsoft's site, it says that the FQDN is
too long, that I need to install the next service pack,
and that a workaround would be to rename the computer one
character shorter and reboot. (This computer has been
used for several years with the same name and all of a
sudden has this problem?)

First of all, how do I install a service pack when I
cannot get the computer to boot at all??

Secondly, how can I rename the computer in a DOS prompt???

Can anyone help???? Thanks!

D.Welsh

P.S. the rest of the stop code states that Windows logon
process terminated with a status of 0X00000080
(0X000000000 0X000000000). The system has been shut down.

Thank you for your prompt response. However, I did check
all the Microsoft help (including the ones you had
noted). The only matching fix
was ...http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;330303...

Again, this states that I must either download the next
Windows 2000 patch or rename the computer. I'm back to
the original problem, where I can only boot to a DOS
prompt. No other boot option works.

My question is... How do I rename a computer in a DOS
prompt??? or how can I download and install the service
patch when I can only boot to DOS???

Thank you again for your patience and support. I would
appreciate it if anyone can give me futher direction.

Thank you.

Anything is possible. But what else has happened recently? Software
installed? Un-installed? Do you have pcAnywhere or other Symantec
products? Did you have a crash? Were there any Event Log entries
before the problem? ...
First of all, how do I install a service pack when I
cannot get the computer to boot at all??

Well, obviously you cannot.
Secondly, how can I rename the computer in a DOS prompt???

You cannot. I suspect some other cause than FQDN is too long.
P.S. the rest of the stop code states that Windows logon
process terminated with a status of 0X00000080
(0X000000000 0X000000000). The system has been shut down.

I have no immediate help at hand but including both the STOP code and
"windows logon process" or "winlogon" may help yield some search
results. Something other than FQDN (maybe)

From other post:

"where I can only boot to a DOS prompt"
There is no DOS prompt in NTx systems. Do you mean boot MS-DOS (and
FAT32 filesystem) or boot to either Safe Mode command prompt or
possibly the Recovery Console prompt? This all could make a
difference eventually in how (if possible) to repair.

BTW What OS and SP level? Assuming W2K and <SP4 (?)

I may have no solutions at all, but providing more information is
better.
