System is XP SP2. Suddenly, I'm getting BSOD stops when I try to run EMC
Retrospect Express backup (came with a Maxtor external drive) OR MS
Backup. This is new in the past couple of days. The only change to the
system I'm aware of are the handful of most recent security updates from
Windows Update. Retrospect Express gets partway into examining the first
volume and quits. MS Backup gets just to the point where it says
Preparing to Back Up using Shadow Copy. Hunting around MS KB suggests
that this error is probably being caused by a driver, but the two
backups are to an external USB disk (Retrospect) and a second, internal
hard drive (MS Backup). Shadow Copy is implemented with driverish stuff
from what I've read.

Could the updates be the cause?

FWIS, Acronis Version 11 does not fail. I don't know what tricks it uses
to achieve consistent image backups on running systems.

Well, I just tried reverting via System Restore to a state before the
most recent MS updates, and it still fails.

How many partitions was System Restore monitoring? It should only
monitor the system partition.

Hope this helps.

Two partitions, in fact. C: --the system-- and F: where I've moved
Documents and Settings for the users.

I came across a very interesting post in a MS forum this morning about a
user with exactly the same problem (with MS Backup). After a couple of
back-and-forth exchanges, s/he said that the problem had been traced to
"security software" and all was working fine. Unfortunately, there was
no more detail forthcoming. I run McAfee Security Suite--it came with
the machine--and find it immensely obtrusive. It pushes updates at least
two or three times a day. Every couple of days, one of them requires a
reboot. So the system changes have not been due just to the MS security
updates; McAfee stirs the pot all the time.
