Don

I have been attempting to lock-down Windows 2000 Server
for our network. One step in the process called for
deleting the OS/2 & Posix strings from the registry
location HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Subsystems\Optional. I believe this may be the
cause of my error. I reboot to see if the string
reappears (as does HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Os/2 Subsystems
for NT\1.0 [subkey]). The system never completely comes
up & a blue screen with the following error occurs:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Unhandled
Exception in Session Manager System process terminated
unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000
0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

1. Is this the cause?
2. What do I need to do to fix it?
3. Can I still delete my registry setting? ...or is there
another way to verify that only one operating system is
loaded on my server?

Thanks!

Not sure I follow all this but if you belive the system hive is now corrupt,
and assuming you already tried LKG, It may be possible to rename the system
hive found in
%windir%\system32\config\system
to system.old
then rename
%windir%\system32\config\system.alt
to
%windir%\system32\config\system

You can also try using the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback

If that fails you haven't much choice but to copy/ use the
original-as-installed system hive from
%windir%\repair\system
to
%windir%\system32\config\system
You'll need to reinstall the device drivers for any hardware added since the
original OS install.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Restore affected registry hive files from backup via Recovery
Console.
3. Can I still delete my registry setting? ...or is there

Neither OS/2 subsystem nor Posix support are "operating systems".

This was a procedure that was given to me by my supervisor
to use. Completing this step supposedly assured that ONLY
W2K was loaded & no other operating system was available.

Thanks for your feedback.

Okay. I doubt anyone can comment in depth without knowing what the
procedure was. Neither the OS/2 subsystem nor Posix support are
"operating systems".

How to Prevent Windows from Loading the Optional OS/2 and POSIX Subsystems
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320869

I've done these steps without experiencing the Stop 0xc000021a.

You can go in to your RC and make a backup of your registry hives (the files
in \winnt\system32\config) so you can later load these hives and see if
there's corruption causing your problem.

You can look at the user.dmp and memory.dmp if they were generated ... they
might help you determine your problem.
