Stop automatic deletion of Recycle Bin contents

I find that whenever I power up my PC, the contents of my Recycle Bin are
deleted. This includes restarting from hibernation- my normal practice

I think I have made a setting somewhere, but I cant find where. I have
looked at TweakUI and AShampoo PowerUp and there are no settings there to do
this.

Is there a registry key somewhere that holds this setting?
If so, what and where ?

Rich,

I couldn't find anything related to automatic deletion or changing anything
so that automatic deletion doesn't happen

Trevor, rt click on Recycle Bin and select Properties. Make sure that you
don't have the box checked saying
"Do not move files to the Recycle Bin etc " and that you have allowed
enough space. 10% if fine.

But that's not what the OP said. His problem was that files do go
into the Recycle Bin, but for some reason the Recycle Bin is emptied
upon booting or returning from hibernation.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like you're just telling
him to make sure the Recycle Bin is active.

(Myself, I don't have a clue what could be causing the behavior the
OP describes.)

Yes, Stan
You are correct - that was my problem

Strange, it seems intermittent. I have some files in my Recycle Bin dated
yesterday and I hibernated overnight.

What I am thinking may resolve the problem is to take all the suspect user
progams (AShampoo, TweakUI. etc) out of startup one by one and experiment to
see what happens (remove one, delete some files, restart, check and repeat
the process)

Trevor,

Since you seem to be stuck with this problem, here are some ideas:

1/ Before shutting down Windows, make sure some files are in the Recycle
Bin (RB for short).

2/ Reboot in Safe Mode and check in the same files are still present in
the RB.

3/ Reboot normally and check again the RB. If I understand your problem,
the files should be gone.

4/ Depending on what you found at 2/, either the RB was emptied upon
Windows shutdown, or when booted normally.

If as I suspect, the RB is emptied upon boot up, then some service or
program automatically empties it. You then need to check, first with
msconfig or with a better utility (there are plenty, I recommend this
free one http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/strun.html) what program or dll
are launched when Windows boots. Disable all of them one by one until
you find the culprit. If this does not work, check in Services what
services are automatically launched to see if you find anything suspicious.

I do not remember seeing any utility or setting allowing for automatic
emptying of the recycle bin but I suspect you inadvertently actived such
a utility.

You might also want to try Fundelete.exe, a utility from Sysinternals
which replaces the RB with a more sophisticated device.

Let me know what you find, I am curious ...

That's about all I can suggest. Of course it's not necessarily in the
startup folder -- various Registry keys also list programs and
services to run automatically.

You might want to download and run the free and excellent Autoruns.
Not only does it list _all_ startups, but you can right-click
anything you're curious about and Google it. Then you can uncheck
anything you don't want run at the next startup.

P.S. You _have_ run complete malware scans, right?

Thanks, Stan

Yes, I was aware that there are various places for the Startup items. So
long as I can track them all down I should be O.K.

I have a couple of programs that may help me. One called StartUp Delayer,
which lists all startups in the registry

I have spyware checkers and Anti-virus programs, together with Microsoft
AntiSpyware so I think I am fairly well protected on this score.

My Recycle bin now has entries titled Earlier This Week, i.e. more than 1
day ago, so it may now be O.K.

Fingers crossed

Excellent! I don't feel like I did much to help, but I'm glad it's
(probably) working now.

Out of curiosity, which program was causing the unwanted action?
Others might want to avoid it.

Actually it is still a mystery.

I think I may have done something when looking at the programs which may
have caused the problem:
TweakUI and Ashampoo PowerUp Tuner

I will do the systematic testing later (perhaps this weekend)

I think the solution to my mystery may be as follows

My Recycle Bin was set to 2.23GB. I deleted several Mpeg files of about 1
GB, so the bin was near to full. When I went to delete some more files, it
simply emptied what was there before adding the new deletions to it.

I think this idea is supported by the fact that the recycle bin got smaller
in content while I was stil logged on, i.e. I had not hibernated, but when I
opened the Recycle Bin to look at it, it has less in it.

Does that make sense?
If so, can I get a warning when this is about to happen. (I know I get a
warning when an individual file is too large for the Recycle Bin, but I
would like one when the Recycle Bin is about to empty itself of old files.)

Yes, and (most likely no), respectively. The "Recycle Bin Overview"
help topic contains this sentence:

"When it fills up, Windows automatically cleans out enough space in
the Recycle Bin to accommodate the most recently deleted files and
folders." -- nothing about that clearing being user configurable.

You can avoid the issue, however. When you delete a very large file,
don't just delete it. Shift-Delete it, which prevents it going into
the recycle bin. (You'll get a confirmation prompt.) If you forget
Shift-Delete, or if you want to let it sit in the R.B. temporarily
while you become certain, :-) you can delete it individually from the
Recycle Bin at any time without affecting any other files sequestered
there.

It's great to know what the cause of my problem was.

I will try to rememberwhat you suggested.

I certainly need to more vigilant :-)
