STOP: 0x51 REGISTRY_ERROR

Here's a wierd one. Win2K system on a Dell gx260, no new hardware, works
fine until shutdown. Then a stop 0x51 REGISTRY_ERROR BSOD!

Power off, then startup, no problems. OK, one problem. No backup of the
registry (who does those on a network of 500 computers, anyhow).

Installed SP4, works fine, but still BSOD (that was supposed to fix the
problem).

What can I do at this point?

Just a suggestion:
If you have any other compatible RAM around, I would swap
the RAM out. A defective RAM stick can cause "registry
errors" that will never be diagnosed as bad RAM. It's as
if Windows always assumes the RAM is good and then gives
error messages based on that assumption.
If it is bad RAM and you boot to Recovery Console to run
CHKDSK /F, then you might make things worse. So you ought
to swap RAM.
A CHKDSK /R might be the best thing you can do for it
after that.
 
RAM didn't work.

Am I reinstalling?

Maybe. Did you look into ensuring that delayed writes are disabled?
Run a chkdsk /f (or /r) on the volume?

And of course do regular registry backups in the future.
 
So it boots fine and works fine - it's just at shutdown
that it BSODs?
Looks like it isn't letting go of a driver or service
properly.
I've seen lots of shutdown problems. Does it do it when
you "shutdown" but not when you "restart"?
