Hi Windows XP is halting on bootup with this error message, the second
part of the error in the brackets is 0x00000032 which according to the
MS site is file system corruption. I have booted into the repair console
numerous times run chkdsk /r then fixboot, the PC will then boot fine
until the next time it is turned off. I guess the hard disk is on the
way out, but would like any other ideas on what to check just in case.
The PC hasn't been upgraded or had anything changed hardware wise to
cause this to happen.
thanks for any replies,
simon

This is probably a bad hard drive, as you suspect. But, I have seen similar
problems caused by bad RAM, also. You might want to download/burn/run
memtest86 from bootable CD-ROM to see what that shows. It won't hurt
anything, anyway. -Dave

Thanks Dave, I have a boot cd here with that on and will give that a go.
Thought this customer job was nice and easy, famous last words. I
collected the PC yesterday, fixed the boot issue or so I thought,
returned the PC this morning to find the power supply had decided to
break in the gap between last night when powered down and this morning.
Brought the PC back fitted a replacement PSU only to find this disk
issue returning. Grr!! :) That'll teach me to try and save the customer
money by not bunging a new disk in straight away.

Awwwww shit. That probably means that the PSU died slowly, and took the
hard drive with it. I hope it didn't kill anything else in the
rocess. -Dave

yeah, that's what I told the customer, hopefully they believe me. I was
wondering if I ghosted the existing disk while it's actually working if
that would be good to restore to the new one, or would it be safer to
run the transfer files and settings wizard, install xp on the new
machine then import the existing settings ?
cheers simon

Good info. I have also seen the corruption caused by a system being
overclocked too far. Are you overclocking your system? If so back off a
little.

I just got through with this very thing....i put in the xp disk, went to the
install (not 'r' for recovery console) where the partitions are shown. Then
used repair option from there. XP notified me that it made changes (fixed) a
hard drive issue. When it rebooted i took out the disk and let it try from
the harddrive again. TADA!!!! fixed the MBR I guess. All worked prfectly
after that.

Where did you see that ?
