Stop 0x000000CA

Hi all,

We have discovered a problem with Windows XP SP2. When connecting to USB
hard disks with same partition sizes, Windows crashes with blue screen Stop
0x000000CA.

The exact problem has been reported to Microsoft with Windows 2003 Server.
However, for Windows XP there is no mentioning of this issue.

need a fix for Windows XP.

The KB Article refers to a problem that results in one variant of that
Bug Code. You need to post a full copy of the Error Report to tell
us which variant you are encountering. You may also find further
information in Event Viewer.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during StartUp and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Why would anyone in their right mind ever want to have "automatic
restart on system failure" enabled? All that does is to guarantee
that you will end up in an endless reboot loop.

Isn't that the default setting? If my understanding is correct you could
tell
the programmers in Seattle how you feel <G>!

Here is the full message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

Plug and Play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver.

Stop code: 0x000000CA (0x00000001, 0x85BBC88, 0x85AED508, 0x00000000)

We have tried connecting two USB hard disks on more than 10 XP systems and
the result is same blue screen (also tried fresh install). If the drives are
connected alone, no problem. But as soon as the second one is connected
alongside the other one, system crashes with the above blue screen.

Windows Vista is fine no problem, 2003 SP2 fine, no problem. Only XP SP2 has
this problem.

You are going to have to try to identify the problematic driver.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click
on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not
checked.

Do you have a Windows XP CD? Does it include the SP2 update or did
you download later?

Are there any corresponding error reports in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for when the problem
occurs. No Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi,
This could be for many reasons * Power supply= not enough power to the to
Power the USB Ex HDD,.
* IRQ conflict.

Try to Set the Internet HDD to Master ( if they are not already been set)
then the External HDDs to slave or cable select.
Rename the atapi.sys to atapi.old and Reboot while the two USB HDD are
connected.

Thank you for your time.

I have tried the tips provided but unfortunately the problem is still there.
First I cannot connect the two same size USB drives together, because
immediately system crashes, if both are connected system crashes as soon as
Windows loads.

Let me tell you my findings so far.

1. Two USB hard disks of same size partitions crash the system with the blue
screen and Stop 0x000000CA. Try it on your Windows XP, I bit on it. (both
disks type should be Fixed Disk)

2. Two USB hard disks of different partition sizes, works fine.
3. Two USB Hard disks of same size but disk type Removable Disk works fine.

Power issue is not relevant here and I have tried 3 USB hard disks of
different sizes, works fine. However, if any two USB drives have same size
partitions and the disk type is Fixed Disk, then the system crashes.
Microsoft has fixed this exact issue in Windows Server 2003. However, it
appears they are not aware of the same issue in Windows XP.

Microsoft article that is related to this issue is:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898446 . The only difference is it relates to
2003 Server and same problem is for XP too which there is no fix out so far.

I appreciate all your efforts and time to help out. You are welcome to try
connecting two same size USB drives (fixed disks) and experience the findings.

0x000000CA: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR
"This indicates that the Plug and Play Manager encountered a severe
error, probably as a result of a problematic Plug and Play driver."

Parameter 1 value is 0x00000001 indicating that this is a "duplicate
PDO" Parameters 2 and 3 are the addresses of the two PDOs.

"A specific instance of a driver has enumerated multiple PDOs with
identical device ID and unique IDs."

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your input.

So far from all the feedback and trying out all options, I can say with full
confidence that this issue would occur in any Windows XP system. Only if two
same size partition USB hard disks are connected at the same time. (The disk
type must be Fixed Disk)

It even happens if you connect two USB flash disks (the flash disk partition
must be fixed-disk not Removable disk).

Please try it for yourself if you have the resources.

If a magical fix comes up, I would be surprised :)
