A friend of mine is running a small mail order sales business and he now has
too much stock to keep track of visually.

He wants a program that can do the following. Say he has brought 10 kettle's
he would want to be able to enter 10 kettle's into a program which would set
his stock level for kettles. He would deduct one from the stock level each
time he sells one.
He would want to be able to check the stock level for a particular item
(i.e. kettle) any time and if possible get a warning when his stock level
for an item reaches a set level.

Does anyone know of a free program that can help him keep track of what
stock he has as outlined above?

I hope someone can help.

I appreciate any help or information given.

Thanks!

One of the sales/invoicing apps here may do that:
