still problems - importing to outlook

I am still having problems with outlook contacts. Created a new personal
folder ~ manually added 1 contact ~ it worked! tried to import from excel
(again) and again recieved an error message and outlook restarted. I made
sure that all excel fields and columns were named and all cells had something
in them. Do not understand why it wont import. I really do not want to enter
all manually! Any ideas?

YOu didn't say what the error message was or what version of Outlook you're using. To import from Excel, you must create a named range that covers the data you want to import, and then save the .xls file. You should also check the field mapping in the import wizar.

Error message was just an error has occured - save all infor - outlook will
restart. I did create a named range - named all columns at the name function
on top left - names were different from column headers. saved file - field
mapping was checked - did not see any problems. One header was imported
before an error occured so all I have in my contacts folder is 155 "state"
listings.

Sounds like you used Insert | Name | Create, which creates multiple ranges, not Insert | Name | Define, which creates just one. You need a single named range that covers all the data. To test, type that name into the box that appears just above the worksheet. Does it select all the data?

Yes - it selects the entire column.

The entire column? That doesn't sound right. Your named range needs to cover *all* the columns that you want to import. Try selecting all the data, then using Insert | Name | Define.

I didnt know to name *all* - Tried that - it worked- tried import of just
that name - the import worked however the contacts folder showed 154 items
and when I tried to open - all were blank. I then deleted items and tried an
import of all other "names". The first "area" showed the transfer in progress
and in contacts the item counter was advancing - it went up past 30000+ items
and then restarted the counter- when it reached 30000+ items (while still
showing a transfer from the first column named "area") I recieved an error
message - outlook encountered a problem - needs to close - sorry.
? - in excel - can there be any blank cells in the import range? I admit I
am new to Outlook - But it shouldnt be this difficult!
 
Sounds like you might have skipped the step where you map the fields in the spreadsheet to the fields in Outlook that you want to hold the data.

The range should not have any blank rows, but can have blank cells in any column where you don't know the phone number, for example.

Nope - completed that step - I did find out that you have to select the
specific data that you want imported - NOT the column which is what I was
selecting. I went back and named ~ column a - rows 1-155 ~ (not column a) and
then selected ~
a-h / 1-155 ~ and named that "members". When I imported to contacts I
mapped "members" and imported. IT WORKED!!!!

expertise that both of you have given me. I have learned sooo much!
