still no sound

updated windows xp, afterwards no sound. uninstalled
card, and the computer found it and reinstalled and still
no sound. tried a new card....no sound. i checked the
device manager and it is supposidly working properly, but
when i go to the volume control it says it can't detect
any sort of sound card. now what?
