Hello...I solved the problem I had when applying an effect
(by renaming "divxaf.ax") but now there is another
problem. Images appear ok in the timeline, but appear
black in playback. Movie clips work ok but 'still
pictures' appear black. I tried to create a movie, saved
it, and played it on media player to see if there is
anything different but again pictures appear to be black
(sound works though). I have uninstalled all the codecs I
had (nimo, divx, xvid, divx antifreezer) to see if there
is a conflict but still no luck. If you know a solution
please help. The specs of my system are posted in this
forum under "Movie Maker 2 closes when I apply an effect"
posted on 28 April 2004. Regards, Chris.

Hello,

This a just in case....

Have you tried my program "Rename Codecs" to see if it is a codec you may
have missed ? Its available from my website...there is also a very short
tutorial on how to use it...short because its very easy to use.

Also, I would appreciate a list of the names of the codecs you suspected, I
can incorporate them in my program if I have not already done so.

Hello John, I have tried your program and it found 11
codec files. 9 of them it managed to rename and 1 other
didn't ( KSPROXY.AX ) which is found in two places on my
pc. The codecs I uninstalled were: divx511Bundled, XviD,
Nimo 5.0 (which has several codecs which i don't remember)
and DivX Antifreezer (which was causing the problem with
the WMM2 sudden shutdown). But the problem is with
the 'still images'. Do you think codecs have anything to
do with this? Regards, Chris.

Hi there,

Thanks for the info...what I was after was the actual names of the
specific files.

The KSProxy.AX often appears in more than one place. There are two
sacred locations on your system where you must never rename "certain"
files...the result is as you described it, and that's OK.

A codec (Coder/Decoder) is used no matter whether the image is still or
not, such that when playing back the finished video all of its contents are
encoded the same way.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Hello. Sorry I don't know specific file names :( The only
one I know is the DivxAf.ax that I had to rename in order
to get rid of the sudden shutdown thing...I hope it is of
help. StillI cannot figure out the problem with blank
images anyway. I tried reinstalling DirectX.9 but again
nothing. Thanx for your help. Regards, Chris.

I have the same problem
Stills show up as thumbnails in the Timeline or Storyboard but are black in the Preview pane. Making a movie of the produces black frames
I also am able to preview movies, just not stills. (JPG, TIFF, BMP)

There seem to be several posts on the forum concerning this issue but no solution yet

I was going to try reinstalling MM2 but perhaps you have already done that? to no avail

Hi there,

I have just spent almost two hours doing some searches of the net looking
for a solution to this problem with no luck at all. I did come across some
rather neat Movie Maker Web sites. But the problem remains apparently
unsolved.

There is an obvious solution, reinstall XP and after each other program is
installed check movie maker. Its obviously possible but highly undesirable.

Before doing anything else I would recomend that both Version 9 of Media
Player and DirectX (The FULL Versions not the auto updates) and install
DirectX followed by a reboot and then install Media Player followed by
another reboot.
