Many thanks to you kind folks who have replied to my original message. Your
efforts are much appreciated. However, I still get the create an association
message when I click a reply link in messages received in Windows Mail. To
update you all so you don't waste your time on something I have already
tried, these are the steps I have taken to try to get rid of this glitch:
1. In the Windows Mail general options section the 'make default' buttons
are greyed out. I am assuming this means that Windows mail is the default. It
is the only mail program I am running so there are no other options.
2. In the associations window, Windows Mail is shown as the default
association for the program.
3. I restored my system to a date prior to the latest Windows Mail update.
4. I uninstalled my anti spyware program. It's now back but with
immunization shut off.
5. I did a complete scan with my AV software.
6. Windows Mail is set to send and receive in HTML.
7. I ran disk check.
8. I ran Windows Installer Cleanup just to make sure some application I had
tried out didn't leave any tendrils behind, but it comes up clean.
9. I contacted Dell and they had never heard of this problem. The techie I
talked to didn't sound too knowledgeable so I wouldn't let them have access
to my computer. I may try them again.
A little background: This glitch (it's not a major problem just an irritant.
For example I can't open any links to replies from this site. I have to open
the main site to view replies.) started after I had to wipe my HD and
reinstall Vista. (I was in the process of resetting to the Dell Factory
Settings after Nero 7 completely corrupted a whole host of files.) During
this process we had a major power failure and everything was gone. I couldn't
reboot or get into any Dell repair or reinstall apps. Since then I have had
this anomaly. As I mentioned in my original posting I can usually circumvent
the situation by contacting the webmaster and providing the info they require
directly, so it's not an earth shaking situation. However, after my
disasterous experience with Windows XP and Symantech I am very aware that
small glitches have a habit of becoming big problems. So, to all you Vista
gurus, any suggestions will be tried out and much appreciated.
Best Regards and keep on truckin'.
