I’ve about had it! I’ve tried every fix that I can find. Yes, I started with
873148. I’ve turned on verbose and found a registry key that appeared to be
the trouble. I’ve changed the permissions: the SYSTEM, administrators, and
myself all have been give full control. I’ve changed the permissions
similarly in both HKLM & HKCR. I’ve been designated the owner. Likewise with
C:\windows. I’ve tried it in safe mode. And of course I swept for spyware &
viruses. I even did a repair install of Windows XP along with Service Pack 1.
So what do I do now???

What exactly happens? It's not easy to tell from here.

Have you tried slipstreaming your XP CD and doing a repair install?

Hi SC,

Ramesh's article usually helps registry permission issues when
installing SP2 for Windows XP.

Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults

to.html

Good Luck

Are you trying to install from a download or from a CD?

Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I did a repair install and then tried to install SP2 which I had downloaded.
I didn’t want to wait 6-8 weeks for the CD.

I haven’t tried to slipsteam it. Will this avoid problems that a repair
install alone won’t? A repair install doesn’t really bring the registry back
its original state.

Yes, I tried to reset the entire registry using the subinacl.exe method
mentioned in Ragesh Srinivasan’s blog. Yet access to the same registry key
was still denied according to setupapi.log.
