Intel Inside

Finally got around to installing the 32bit version of build 5728 and found 4
bugs in the 1st 10 minutes of use.

I'd say the RTM build number will be atleast 6000 at this rate.

I don't know if this is one of the original author's issues, but a large
number of people cannot add network printer's. It simply says Access
Denied. I have yet to find a solution for this after hours of searching.

Don't worry, I hope to report them to MS this weekend.
I've gone back to using XP for now. I sure hope there is a RC2 (even if it
is just downloadable).

An RC2 is highly improbable. There will be at least one more build for
TechBeta, but not RC2, and I don't know if the TechBeta build will be
released publicly as 5728 was.

You said "I don't know if the TechBeta build will be released publicly as

You could be right, but if someone like me can find 4 bugs in the 1st 10
minutes of use, maybe the build you spoke of should be released to CPP too.
Tom Ziegmann has encouraged CPP members in here to submit bug reports.
Remember, if you don't find the bugs before RTM, Vista will be bagged
severely on final release.
Roll on SP1.

Well, I have talked recently with Microsoft and they are very interested
in having Vista stable, before general release, so it probably will end
up being released for public testing, although perhaps not initially.
Microsoft could always have an expiration date for the software, that
would prevent using it beyond a certain date, if it is mostly stable and
they are worried someone would continue using a pre-retail build and not
buy the actual retail build. I hope the Sound Blaster Audigy issue and
general poor use of the sound panel that kept crashing with builds 5600
and 5728 are fixed in the next build and Creative and Microsoft don't
wait all the way to RTM (Release to Manufacturing) for a fix. Someone
else posted about having success using the Windows XP driver(s) with the
Sound Blaster Audigy (2? I think). I have now learned with the testing
of this product to try the earlier driver that is for XP first
especially if the Vista one is in beta to see if that will work.

Dan,
I suggest submitting a bug report from within Vista for these issues
otherwise MS thinks Vista is 'ready'.

The problem with Creative sound cards is well known and has been bugged.
The Creative Beta 2 drivers work for some, but are flaky. Creative says
they will have stable drivers by RTM.

You wrote "Creative says they will have stable drivers by RTM."
Fair enough, just like NVidia will have stable drivers too.
I think there should be another interim release with all of the stable
drivers included *before* RTM.

Well sure....lol...lots of things I'd like too. I don't know if or when
Creative will have their drivers out - I just know what they said, and that
the problems with their drives have been bugged from way back.

It certainly is to everyone's benefit that they are out sooner than later.
But there are many hardware manufacturers that haven't released any Beta
drivers and may not release any Vista drivers at all for legacy hardware.
Many of the printer manufacturers are in that category. They did the same
thing for XP.

That is entirely up to the hardware manufacturers.
And as usual most are waiting for RTM before they dedicate much resources on
a driver so their efforts are not wasted on a driver made obsolete on a
change in a later build.

"with all of the stable drivers included"
"all" is a great many and some will never come out in Vista while others may
take several months.
So while it is a good idea, it is not at all practical.

I just wish Creative would have made stable drivers before RTM. :-< At
least Sound Blaster Audigy -- all versions will be supported in Vista
eventually -- Yay and thank goodness for that -- need to keep 98SE for
stability, backwards compatibility, testing and other purposes on this
PC and to have fairly modern hardware is greatly appreciated. BTW,
anyone who uses 98 or 98SE can check out the microsoft general newsgroup
on ways to keep 98SE secure now that support has ended as of July 11,
2006 from Microsoft. A bunch of us -- 98 guy, myself, Chris Quirke,
MVP, etc. are working on these issues and if you need 98SE for older
games and programs then come check out the newsgroup and let Microsoft
know that you want the Windows Classic series that I have proposed to
Microsoft. If enough people want a 98SE replacement using the 9x source
code combined with NT source code and open source code then we can make
this operating system a reality but the more support I get for this the
better. I am sure I will have the head of technology at APS on board
with this soon since the public schools in the U.S. need this
replacement to fully run all of their older software and it is one main
reason the schools still have 98 Second Edition PC's in operation along
with XP Professional PC's.

Good point, Rock. My Epson Stylus C64 works with the XP driver from
Epson in Vista. :->

However, congratulations are in order to Ati for releasing stable video
drivers for Vista before it even hits RTM. I am not sure if Nvidia did
the same but the problem for me with Nvidia is that it once seriously
messed up a system I was upgrading the video card from a 3dfx video card
and the G-Force or GE-Force Nvidia card destroyed everything.
Fortunately, 98SE is protected by a customized version of GoBack that
does not call home and has extra bloatware removed from it by me. I can
indeed manually edit the registry and enjoy doing so in 98SE. I also
especially enjoy the power of a text based interface and love reliving
the glory days of DOS and old DOS games. I even remember on my PCjr
which I still have in storage doing BASIC programming and making the
colors flash on the screen along with notes. Ah those were the simpler
good old days but much too limited for a user nowadays. -- <smile>
