The trackball on my MS Trackball Explorer has all of a sudden become really
sticky. Is there any way to get it to flow more smoothly, as before? Or, is
my mouse on its way to the grave? Please advise. --Laura

You can order replacement ball bearings for them...we have had to a few
times in our office. The running joke here is "so and so wore out their
littlle balls again"!

Thanks to Dave and MP for the helpful replies.

How do you extract the old ball bearings? And how do you instal the new ones?

thanks,
Laura

I have two MS Trackball Explorers. I clean the cup and
the bearings with a 1/2" paintbrush, and rinse the ball with
hand soap and warm water with great success.

One time I wiped the ball with 99% isopropyl alcohol,
and when I put it back it was almost seized in the cup.
I removed it, used the soap and water, and it rolled
effortlessly.

I have a Logitech Marble Mouse trackball that has had constant, daily use
for over 8 years(!). MS hardware, and MS mice in particular, are cheaply
made, and do not last very long compared to other brands. I would *NEVER*
recommend any Microsoft keyboard or mouse to anyone. I spent 23 years in
the Military, and my job required computers. Every time someone would
"upgrade" the shop to MS keyboards and/or mice, we all laughed because we
knew they would only last a few weeks under normal use.

My advice: retire the old mouse and buy a Logitech.
