Sticky Keyboard

Hello I have a problem typing. I hit a key and nothing comes up on the screen.
Only after waiting a few moments does the character show up. Constantly
happening. How can I fix?

Spilt coffee, dirt or bad contact in the keyboard, perhaps? Does
it affect all keys?

Before you try anything else, shut down your computer. Connect a
different keyboard and reboot.

If that resolves the symptoms, then you have a hardware problem.

That cannot be the cause if the character eventually comes up. If the
keyboard is dirty as a result of
spillage the character typed will never come up (unless repeatedly striking
the key)
The problem is more likely something running in the background using
computer time.
Stop all background programs especially virus scanners until the culprit is
found.

The OP provided insufficient info for a proper diagnosis.

In particular, we do not know whether he struck the key
repeatedly (until the character appeared on screen). However,
the subject header did mention a "sticky keyboard". That is why
I asked whether the problem affected all keys. That is also why
I suggested the OP should test with a different keyboard -
"before trying anything else".

I did not state that a different keyboard would definitely
resolve the problem. A different keyboard was merely the first
thing to try - and I agree that if it does not resolve the
problem, then the OP will have to look elsewhere for a solution.

I found an application that normally runs on my PC without problem was
using a steady 5% of my CPU. This shouldn't be enough to delay ketboard
strokes, but it did. I now stop that application when my keyboard slows
down.

Happy to hear you got it working well.
BTW, what program is causing the problem and ,if you don't need it, perhaps
you can disable it from starting until you need it.

PS: Perhaps even uninstall that program and install it again or, if there is
an updated version of it, install that, if you really need that program.

Reread his post. "Only after waiting a few moments does the character show
up"
Does that suggest anything?
You state 'before you try anything else---try a new keyboard'. Some people
(most all) do
not have spare keyboards.

He's not the OP.

"Stuartalanost's" post didn't show so I just assumed wrong when Swifty
responded. My bad.
Also, the post I sent, which you just quoted, is also not showing in this
thread. Hmmm.
Thanks for the heads up,
Buffalo

Oops! I meant Outlook Express.

Yep, with OE-QuoteFix.

PS: Never seemed to have this problem when Comcast had their ng support.
Since I went to eternal-sep these things have been happening.

It's Netlimiter/2 which loads in two parts; a driver which hooks into
the TCP/IP stack (to acquire the traffic data) and a user GUI to display
things. It is the user GUI that slows my PC (and not until it's been
running a few minutes). So I use the GUI only when necessary.

I suspect the problem is an interaction with something else in my
system, as I've seen no other reports of similar problems. However, a
lot of people would just reboot without ever managing to find which app
was causing the problem.

Could it possibly a interaction with your anti-virus program?

Why not use Microsoft's news server at msnews.microsoft.com? That way
you'll stand a better chance of not missing any messages.

Bob Lucas gave the correct & obvious first (and most time the last
needed) step ie: try an alternative piece of hardware. Depending on
the "spillage" consistency (ie: the amount/lack of sugar, cream etc.)
the offending key can come up & down with a will of it's own.

It could be (but then it could be almost anything). What has me puzzled
is how an application that is using less than 7% of the CPU, and doing
almost no I/O, can cause delays in keystrokes appearing. It may be
causing a high level of some activity that doesn't get accounted for
(maybe generating interrupts), but I know that the cpu usage is low,
because my PC's fan gets noisier as the CPU climbs, and this application
has never caused that to happen.

I've learned to live with it.

I looked in TM and found a Java process called jqs.exe running and,
although it wasn't using much cpu time or memory, I disabled it (Java
Control Panel,Advanced,Misc,Java Quick Starter) and my reaction time in Q3
online playing improved greatly. Hard to believe that a process using so
little cpu and memory could slow reaction timing down for online playing,
but it did. Perhaps it is checked by my antivirus and/or my antimalware
programs and that is what is causing the slowdown. Never would have believed
it.

Excellent. Thanks for letting us know.
