IrfanView and XnView can take two ore more images and
combine them to a "panorama" image, combine the images
together horizontal or vertical.

What program is the best to stitch two pictures together?

Thanks
Henry

PhotoFiltre will do it - Edit > Paste Special > Assemble. You can
also increase the canvas size and paste from clipboard - this allows
you to move the selection before pasting.

Depends. For stitching microscope pictures, see:

Package: MicroscopePictureStitch
System name: mipisti
License: gpl

Description:
MiPiSti is for stitching pictures originating from a microscope cam.
MiPiSti works in 2 steps. In the first step it will calculate the offset
position of each picture and its successor in a sequence of pictures. In
the second step those offsets are used to put all pictures into one
overall picture. It is planned, that image correction (lens errors
(dust...) inhomogeneous illumination) will be done in this step as well.

At the moment, basic functions work with uncompressed 24bit bmp-files.
The command line program can calculate the offsets and stitch a sequence
of bmp2-files.

MiPiSti is written in C++ (gcc) using the STL under Linux, so it should
be portable to other OS than Linux.
