Step by step startup utility for WinXP

There are a lot of utilities to view the programs started by Windows at
startup, but I'm looking for an utility to startup Windows step by step.
Not as the step by step option of Windows, which shows only the drivers when
started and then doesn't show the programs: I mean the ability to decide to
start or not a program the system would start at startup.
Thanks.
Giovanni

Thank you for your answer. I apologize for my ignorance, but I don't think
that it's possible to start manually the programs at startup using msconfig.
But maybe I'm only unaware how to do it. As I said, I'd like to start
manually each program -not only the installation of the drivers-during a
normal boot (not safe mode).

The only thing that *has* to run is Explorer. It isn't in MSCONFIG which
means that everything else there is optional. Perhaps you could use a
program launcher?

If so, check Google for "program launchers" one example of which is RUNit
from...

Hold down F8 before the Windows bootup screen appear.
Choose "Step by step confirmation".

Thank you. But, as I said, "Step by step confirmation" doesn't let me
control the start of the programs, only the installation of the drivers.

There is a program called startup delayer which allow you to set a
delay and the sequence in which they start.

Bye for now.

Clive.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. I'm still looking for an utility
(if there is one) I can decide to start or not the programs at startup
with.
Regards.

The start up manager suggestions you received don't do what you want.
Here's a way you can do exactly what you want. Instructions are for Win98
but you should be able to do something similar if not the same in WinXP.

1. Make a new folder on your desktop. Maybe name it "Optional Startups".

2. Using MSCONFIG or a start up manager, identify the programs whose
starting you want to control.

3. Make a shortcut to each of the programs and put the shortcuts in your
new folder.

4. Disable the starting of each of the programs (using MSCONFIG or a start
up manager)

5. Move your new folder to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

What's going to happen is that when Windows starts up it will open your
folder. You can then click on any program you want to start.

Thank you, DadiOH, your solution is very smart and I've used it. But my
original problem is different: I asked for a way to control the starting
programs only to understand why, every time my system starts up, Windows
Installer starts without any reason. I tried to find and answer in a
dedicated newsgroup, but nobody was able to help me. So I thought that
controlling the starting programs could help me. Unluckily, Windows
Installer is controlled by the system and I have no capability to control
it.
Thank you again.

Well, why didn't you say so in the first place? Now that you have done so,
perhaps someone can give you an answer.

For my part, I would guess you had a bummed up install of some program. Try
this...check MSCONFIG to see if GRPCONV is set to run on startup. If so,
untick it.

OK. This is a whole new question. What do you mean by 'Windows
Installer'? What is it trying to do?

There's bound to be a way of stopping it.

I don't know if it's related in any way, but I had something similar happen
to me. Once I uninstalled MS Journal Viewer the problem went away.

Thank you everyone for your support. I havn't a lot to add to what I've
already said: all the times my system (WinXP Pro SP1) starts up, the window
of Windows Installer saying that it's preparing an installation appears and
then disappears, two times: the first one, it remains some time, the second
one, it remains only a few seconds. I scanned my system many times with many
products looking for some type of malware (the obvious supposition), but I
never found anything. I looked for help in the newsgroup
"microsoft.public.windows.msi" and there a person gave me a script which was
made to trace the startup of the Windows Installer and to identify the
problem. I ran the script and I sent the result, but that person was unable
to give me other support.
I tried both the suggestion of dadiOH and of Klaatu, but I havn't found
GRPCONV nor MS Journal Viewer.
Thank you again.

Have you tried emptying your temp folder/s and clearing your cache?

I tried the new suggestions without any result (always starting of Win
Installer at every startup). Now I try uninstalling Office which perhaps
could be the reason of this fault due to an incorrect installation.
