Steam still sucks...

I've read all that stuff with a pinch of salt. I can understand the
annoyance ppl get with such a delivery device as Steam. I think valve have
implemented it at a pretty average standard. I mean... you need online
verification to play Offline? So what do people with either 56k or no actual
internet presence do? Might as well buy a brick. Then you can throw that
bitch at Valve.
Personally, I've had absolutely NO problems with Steam or any of its games.
For me, its been excellent - and I can see this is a great step forward in
limiting software piracy. Valve have come up with an excellent idea, but
just implemented it like retards. Hopefuly they'll learn from this.

Well the irony is that the people who pirated this game do not have to put
up with this nonsense. So it inherently only serves as spyware for whatever
corp agenda the developers or publishers have in mind. Hence I have debated
and still not going to buy it even though I want it.

First version of HL that came out had the same problem as it dialed your
dial-up ISP without your permission (remember that). That episode pissed
off enough people that a patch soon cured that problem. I hope that this
happens to HL2.

If not, I will not buy it. Simple as that. They don't need or want my
money, that's fine with me. No argument there. It's too bad though as I
think I would enjoy the game.

My sentiments exactly. I am waiting for HL2 to be released on the Xbox to
avoid all this Steam crap. Unless of course they have some kind of Steam
authentication via Live?

I bloody well hope not.

Well, I am going to go against the flow here and say that I think Steam is a
good idea. I say this due to not needing to insert the dvd every time I want
to play, as I have had discs bugger up in the past and not recieved good
customer service from those responsible, (thank God the fire inspector's
report was inconclusive), I play mostly in offline mode, and I think that
anything that makes the thieves lives more awkward a blessing. It is only a
pity that Valve could not send a power surge down the line of all the
thieving scum with counterfeit copies and fry thier rigs.......

I don't think people are saying Steam is a bad idea, just that it is poorly
implemented, and/or poorly run.

If you think it makes using a cracked copy of the game harder to use you are
wrong (quite sad that you believe it actually). This kind of stuff pisses
people off so much that they are more likely to not buy a game out of spite
because something like Steam has jerked them around so much.

Well that was my whole point. It doesn't do squat to deter or make their
lives awkward. They don't use or need steam.

Steam only causes problems for people who PAID for it.

The benefit lies in the fact that the developer now spywere on thousands of
customers PCs. Zero benefit to the legal consumer.

That is like saying, nobody should use Windows, because Microsoft sucks.

Well, 99% of all software is Windows.

Steam sucks, and the install needing an active connection, is no less then
XP needing to register online to install the OS. But if you want the end
result, XP, or HL2, you will have to live with it.

Steam's little popup game starter, that needs to validate, before decrypting
hard drive files, is just a bit much, but I sat thru it, cause I wanted the
game.

Agreed. I too am avoiding any game that uses Steam or other similar
"services". I let Valve know that, too. That's two games of theirs that I
haven't bought now.
