I run Windows XP, have a broadband connection so i can stay online 24/7 if
need be but i have normally shut down when i am off to bed or out. I
belong to a few groups that can generate loads of e-mails, i just want to
ask if i need a screensaver to come on or about power saving, hibernation
and all that, don't have a clue about those things, really just want to know
what is the best thing to do if i leave my comp on 24/7. Thanks:-)

I leave mine on 24/7, during the day I have the screen saver running and at night I use standby.

I have run my computers for years 24/7. All you need to do is turn off your monitor when you are away.
I do not use screen savers nor any of the power management options, except when on battery back-up.
The "turn off monitor" setting can be used if you like, but I don't reccomend turning off hard disks, or hibernation
Others may feel differently, but I just turn the computer off when needed.
You should also consider getting Zone Alarm, a free firewall that has a Stop button to block internet access when
you are away and the computer is on. Go to www.zonelabs.com to get a copy. Win XP has a decent firewall,
but it gives you no control on outgoing applications, such as trojans, adware or spyware
