status of next generation DVD (FMD, fluorescent multilayer disc) ?

Mad Scientist Jr

A FMD disc the size of a CD can hold 50-100 GB per disc?
Is this still in development, was a hoax, or did Sony or some other
big company buy the developers out and kill the project ?
