I am working with an Excel file in Excel 2002 that was
created in an unknown earlier version of Excel. On the
status bar on the bottom of my screen I have "calculate"
near "ready" on the left portion and "fix" on the right
side near "num". The auto-recalulate option is turned on.

Can anyone tell me either what these mean or where I
might find some information about the "calculate"
or "fix"? I understand manual recalculation and changing
back and forth to it doesn't eliminate it. Should I
ignore them, can I change a setting to elimate them, etc,
etc, etc?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The "Fix" means you have Tools>Options>Edit "fixed decimals" checked on.
Uncheck it.

As far as the "calculate" message goes, if you are sure you are set to
"auto-calculate" perhaps you should read this KB article for some help on a
couple of issues that may create this.
