Until recently the status bar stayed undisplayed. But now
it reappears everytime I restart I.E. and everytime I
launch a new window within I.E. How can I turn it off so
that is stays off?

Mike

P.S. I don't have this problem with Windows Explorer.

Don, the link was not available. My problem is the exact opposite of Mike's.
My won't stay on, even if I lock the toolbars. Everytime it goes to a new
screen, it turns off the Status Bar. Any other suggestions? Thanks, JL

Some have had luck with this procedure:

Close all other windows.
Open Windows Explorer.
Make sure that the status bar is showing.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | View and click the option to make all folders
like this one.
Reboot.

If that doesn't do it, here's a more thorough method from Mike Burgess:

If your status bar disappears when opening a new IE 6 browser window:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button.
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
9) Open IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New
Window"
10)Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

I also cannot get my status bar to remain displayed. This has JUST started
acting this way.
I followed all the advice, even changed regedit. When I open regedit, "Show
Status Bar" is always on "no." I change it to "yes." Click ok, close it
out, and when I open it up again, it is back to "no." And each browser
window eliminates the status bar.
Why is it doing this, how can I get the status bar to come back and STAY
BACK????
If you can help me, I'd so appreciate it!
Sandra

Hi Sandra :-)

Try the following and see if it helps. If there are some you have already
tried just ignore them:

Status bar won't show or does not stay enabled

Start with one instance of IE. Select View | Status Bar. Now press Ctrl
while clicking the X in the upper-right-hand corner of the window to close
the application. Next, open My Computer and select View | Status Bar.
Finally, go to Tools | Folder Options and select the View tab. Click Apply
to all folders, confirm the dialog, and then close Windows Explorer.

or.......

Status Bar disappears

If that does not work, then I suggest that you do a repair of your IE.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help!
I had already tried all of these with no success...but tried them again
anyway. Also ran my spyware thingie again...and now it seems to work. The
status bar is there, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks so much for your help,!
