static ips

I'm tring to connect two machines via a crossover cable.
However, I have DHCP and don't have static ip for each
machine. Can I just simply enter a ip address manually
and get this to work, or am I going to have to get static
ip addresses from my ISP?

Unfortuneately, my ISP doesn't hand out static ip
addresses. Any suggestions, is it free?

I ran that way for several years. As long as the two
machines connected to the crossover cable are on a LAN,
you should have no trouble. I just made up some numbers
(1.0.0.1 and 1.0.0.2) and they worked.

Interesting.. thanks for the reply. However, I bet I
won't be able to have Internet connection, just share
files.

I'm not an expert, but I think you set your IP address for
each computer via going to the properties for your local
area connection. Select the properties for TCP/IP and
then select "use this IP address" put in an IP address for
each computer i.e. 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2.

You can use a router and only one ip address will be
recognized but multiple connections/computers can be on
at the same time. Use it on my cable modem hookup now
with four computers and only one ip address.
