HI, i have boradband and a router. my router ip address is 192.168.1.1, the
ip address that i have set it to give my pc is 192.168.1.3, how do i set up a
static ip address with windows 2000. i am running iis on it, i had ago at
setting it up. but most of the time i had no internet access at all, probly
becasue i set it up wrong, and then when i set my router to alow incomming
connections to port 80 on my pc all i got was my routers login page, wich
made me scratch my head alot.. i need to know how to set my pc up with ip
address 192.168.1.1 so that i can then fiddle around with the router to get
that forwarding as it should. as at the moment i think both are set up
wrong... any help would be very appreciated.

first, you can't set your pc for 192.168.1.1 since that is the router's
address. to set up the manual address on the pc gointo the control panel
for the connection and set the ip address to 192.168.1.3, the gateway to
192.168.1.1 (so it knows to go out through the router), and the dns address
to either the router 192.168.1.1 if it provides a dns proxy or to your isp's
provided dns addresses. then tell the router to forwarding port 80 to
192.168.1.3.

now note that the 192.168.1.1 is not what someone outside will use to get to
your server, you will have to see that your isp has assigned to the internet
side of the router for an address and that is where to direct users from
outside to go to. if you try to connect to 192.168.1.1 from inside your lan
you should get the router setup, that is normal. depending on the router
you might be able to use the isp's public ip address to contact your site
from inside, or you might have to use localhost or 127.0.0.1. a way to test
your site as if you were outside is to go to a proxy service like
www.anonymizer.com or some other free proxy and surf back to it from there.
