static ip addressing

I have a network card that seems to only work with ip
information added statically. When I try to do the
settings dynamically, the network card only gets a
private IP address (169...).
Is there somewhere in XP that I must set?

If you get the 169.254._._ IP, this means you have no
connection or cannot get and IP.
Your NIC should be able to do dynamic as long as it can
connect to an DHCP server, it looks like it cannot since
you get the 169.254 IP.
goodluck and repost what you find out ok.

Have you tried ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew at
the command prompt?

Thank you for responding...
Yes I have tried teh release / renew motif. When the
card isset to dynamic, and it has the 169 number, it says
it is already released. Then I dothe renew and it takes
a long time and then comes up and says could not renew,
could not get to the dhcp server.
But with the card set dynamically, I can access the
network and internet ( I am using the computer as we
speak) with a static setting.
Now again, if I go to make the settings dynamic, I will
only get 169 ip address....
My ISP will not allow me to use static.
Is there some way to fix this....
just to let you know, I have reinstalled xp again!!
thanks

It looks like there is an DHCP issue here than. Is your
ISP's DHCP server working properly??? if you do
release /renew and don't get a valid IP but the 169.254 IP
means it cannot connect to their DHCP server.
Have them test it.

Gentlemen and Ladies,
Great news!! I got it figured out... and boy do I feel
&@#%!$^&^ dumb!
Here lay the simple resolution.... i looked into the
router settings and discovered that the DHCP was set to
4. The issue being that this computer is number 5.
Changing the setting to 7 allowed the computer to access
the dhcp server and was then appointed an ip address.
Pretty simple, but without the assistance from people
here, i would have not even thought about the router as
the issue.
Thank you all.... I just love sittin back and reading all
this stuff..... live and learn, I say!!

Did it work before you reinstalled Windows XP? If so, I'm
guessing it's probably something with the NIC
installation. I would try to remove the network card then
reinstall and see if that fixes the problem.
