I get 4 error messages in the startup menu. In the system configuration utility there are 2 lines in start up item and command that are all little squares.

What are the error messages? In the meantime, uncheck the boxes. That will
prevent them from running. Check your runkeys here: Start/Run/Regedit and
remove suspicious listings from there.

The error messages are :windows cannot find ...............(all little squares) and then
Desktop:could not load or run ...............(all little squares). I get each message 2 times in this order

Sounds like left overs from a virus, etc. cleanup, that didn't perform all
that greatly.

Go through what I mentioned earlier. If you aren't comfortable doing that,
start over:
