during startup I get a fault window which reads as
follows:
C:\docum~\alluse\startm~\programs\startup\winlogon.exe
the NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction
cs:0540 IP:0/a5 OP:6373 2 e 67 69
chose'close to terminate the applicaton.

What is the "fix" so this does not run each time?

Check your system for viruses with an antivirus program that has current
virus definitions.

The startup folder is not a standard location for the winlogon.exe file. XP
normally maintains this file in the Windows\system32 (and you may find a
copy in Windows\servicepackfiles if SP1 is installed). XP does not use a
startup folder shortcut to start this process.

If you have other winlogon files (or closely named winlogin files) strongly
suspect a virus or trojan and work to clean the system. Below are links to
