Andy Roberts

I recently reformatted my hard drive and had a problem installing win xp.

I tried to re-install and it worked second time round. However my system
now thinks it has 2 OS and offers me a choice of which one to boot up. Can
I bypass this or remove the 2nd one as it dosent work anyway.

If not can I reduce the 30 second timer to 1 second so I don't have to wait
or be present to press return when I boot?

The pc is a dell c540 laptop with Win XP SP1

Thanks

Andy

Click Start, Run and enter C:\BOOT.INI This will open BOOT.INI in Notepad. Remove the reference to the failed installation of XP. If you're not sure what you're removing, post back with the contents of your BOOT.INI and the information about your hard drives and partitions.

Both are possible. It's easy and safe to reduce the wait time. Open System Properties in the Control Panel, Click the Advanced tab, click the Settings tab in the Startup and Recovery Section, and safely edit the settings. However if you decide to edit the Boot.ini file itself, know that if it is not done perfectly your system will not restart. Even if you make a backup file it's not that simple to use the Recovery Console to replace the bad one.

Thanks Doug - Job done!
