I have dialog box coming up at startup '16winupdate32.exe
has encountered a problem' and a Window opens containing
System32. How can I fix without having to throw away and
buy a Mac.

That's part of malware. Run these programs to check for
spyware/malware. After installing update them, then boot into safe mode
and run them. You should update and run them weekly.
