Can I have a list of programs that Vista needs running in the background? I
want to disable some things, but I don't want to disable the wrong program.

Why? Do you want to accelerate starting the system? Then the answer would
possibly point into another direction.
Please let us know.

Yes. I'm looking to accelerate starting the system.

Okay. I have accelerated significantly the starting of my notebook by 2
actions.

First, I have set a fix IP-address for LAN (working with a DSL-modem via
cable, not WLAN). That reduced the overall startup-time from 2 minutes to
1.5 minutes.
(Before, the time was wasted in determining the network address.)
Second, I have set the speed of my processor to maximum performance. That
brought the time down to 57 seconds. Before the speed was at it's lowest,
which was always sufficient for Windows XP.

I have not changed anything with programs at startup.
