I am using Windows xp. What is the simplest way of deleting the many unnecessary programs that start up when the computer fires up? i.e. where is the startup folder?

click on start then run
.............
type in msconfig
..................
then select the start up tab
.......................
bingo uncheck all the applications that you do not want to start...

Startup folder is Start>All Programs>Startup. :)

Try and disable the start up in the programs them self first before you use msconfig, if you can,

Thanks a lot, psd99. Job done, indeed.

Sorry ... I have said this before, so, I'll say it again

msconfig should NOT be used to remove programs from startup ... it's primary use is to diagnosing problem program that startup from that list.

V_R gave you good advice ... ;)

Go get "Decrapifier" if you have loads of installed crud ... or simply uninstall the program. :thumb:

LoL ... It was originally "designed" to alleviate "bloatware/trialware/crapware" installed on Dell PCs ... it was soon discovered it would work on any of the big boys PCs.

It is very good at getting rid of the crap that these manufacturer's install.

It is in my "toolbox" kit of essential software. :D
