Startup Screen is unreadable

I have XP on a laptop. When I start the computer, the
screen is not readable. There are patterns of different
colors which do not appear to be random. The system will
boot, but I can't see what is on the screen. After XP is
running, the screen does not have a pattern anymore, but
it loooks like there is a layer of colors obscuring the
desktop. Also, the cursor is overlaid with colors. It
seems like this problem is caused by a virus, but I have
run an antivirus program and no virus is found. I have
tried to restart and press the F2 key and the F12 key, but
the screen is still obscured although the patterns are
different and I can see fraction numbers repeated on the
screen After a few minues the screen will clear up and
everything appears normal until I try to restart and the
same thing happens again. Do I need to reinstall Windows
or is there something in the registry file that is causing
the problem?

the fact that it clears up after a few minutes leads me to
suspect a hardware problem, most likely the screen itself
or possibly the video adapter. We've had similar issues in
the past (bizarre colours, bands, etc.), and they have
always been hardware (screen) related.

Good luck with it.

This suggestion may be off base, but you haven't anything to loose by going
to the computer manufacturers or the video card manufacturers website and
trying to see if there's newer drivers for you to download and try.

Hope this helps,
Milt

Try installing/re-installing the drivers for your video card. If that
doesn't work, then you'll probably want to talk to the
manufacturer about your video card.
