Hi All,
I am a system builder and I am trying to find out what my options are when a
customer has motherboard
failure and a different motherboard is installed. With Windows XP I had an
option to do a reinstall
over the existing install and most of the time that would fix the problem.
I have tried using the repair option with the Vista DVD but it didnt help.
The system as
it is giving me blue screens so I cant do an upgrade from windows and it
wont safeboot.
I tried to install new mb drivers from usb stick but they wouldn't install.
This is a situation with as time goes on I will be seeing more and more of
people that have no backups
of there systems and needing new motherboards that will need to replaced.
What can I do to get these systems
back working with there original OS and programs besides using identical
motherboards (not always an option)
or full reinstall which basically loses everything. I read where using the
full backup entire computer that comes with
Windows Vista Business and Ultimate works with restoring to different
hardware. Anyone tried this and know if its true?

If a startup repair doesn't do it then the choices are the two you list near
the end of your post - identical or very similar motherboards, or a clean
install restoring data from a backup and reinstalling programs from original
media.

Is that it? there is no way to even repair the install? in XP it was a simple
matter of reloading the IDE controller Drivers to get it to work again, this
was done with an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP from CD. In
vista this Can't be done? Why?

<snip>

No there is no repair install, aka in place upgrade, feature in Vista. From
the Vista DVD, there is a startup repair feature that focuses on repairing
startup problems but it's not an in place upgrade.

Why? I don't know. MS has not said or at least I haven't heard why.
