When I look in msconfig at the Startup panel, one if the checked items' name
is blank and also the command is blank. The location is given as:

HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Anyone know what this is, or how to deduce it? I'm inclined to think it's
something I don't want, but I thought I'd ask here.

Thanks.

Bill

FWIW, I unchecked this item, rebooted and it disappeared from the msconfig
listing. It doesn't show up as unchecked, it is totally gone.

It's a registry key, which you must not delete.

The fact that it's blank, as you say, means that no programs happen
to be set to run in that key.

I see in a later message you mentioned that it's now gone from
MSConfig. It's still in your Registry, as it should be.

For a clearer _and_ more complete presentation or startup programs,
try the free Autoruns program from www.sysinternals.com .

Thanks Stan. The www.sysinternals.com program also helped me to decode
another low level irritation in the registry that I hadn't gotten around to
running down.

Happy to help!

sysinternals.com has quite a few very useful utilities. It's no fly-
by-night operation either. A couple of days ago I happened to run
across my Win 98 bookmarks, and sysinternals was there too.
