I'm looking for the windows configuration screen/area that allows you to see
what programs are executing at start up and prevent them from staring. I
have located the screen that let's me see them under computer
management|system information|software environment|startup programs, but I
can't control them from there.

Maybe I've seen this in a different O/S. Can we do this in Win2K?

Most helpful, the registry method, thanks. I still have some mysterious
plugins (or something) in my IE, so I will try the links you suggested
below, unless you have anoehr suggestion for that.

I have a toolbar that I can't get rid of and a whole bunch of favories I
can't get rid of (described previously subject : ghosts in IE favorites).
There's also a tool pallette of some kind right at the bottom of the main
browser viewing area. That one I can close (Alt-F4) but it comes back after
rebooting.

Thanks again.

Although Win2K has no built in utility, the msconfig.exe from XP works
just as well for Win2K.

Place msconfig files into winnt\system32 then run msconfig from start run

You're welcome. As for the IE problems try running basic spyware/adware
removal utilities to begin with. Try these:

AdAware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot - Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

These two applications should help you get rid of the basic pests that
might be infecting IE. Also, look in the Control Panel Add/Remove
Programs to see if any IE add-on toolbars can be removed there, some of
the legitimate IE add-ons can be properly uninstalled there. If you are
still having problems you might want to ask on the Internet Explorer
newsgroup for more help.

Thanks again. I believe I got everything cleaned up. I had installed both of
those, but it seems that in some cases, that's like closing the gate after
the horse got away. Everything was coming up clean so I just hunted around
for suspicious looking folders, and investigated the contents using Google
search. Found lots of nasty stuff to delete.

Tedious work, but kids will be kids.

The best I have seen so far is a little freeare utility called
StartUpManager, which displays all programs that start automatically. It
even shows you where they are invoked -- startup folder, registry|run, etc.

You can download it from:

I like this similar program, Startup Control Panel:

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It makes it very easy to disable and re-enable startup programs for
testing or troubleshooting.
