i am using windows xp,i have install alot of programs in my computer as a
result it is taking a long time for the programs to start when windows
start.is there any way that i can prevent or omit unwanted programs for
starting up when windows start?

The easiest way of stopping programs from starting when windows does is to
edit the system configuration utility.

1/ Click the Start button
2/ from the start menu click Run
3/ In the Run dialogue box type: msconfig
4/ When the system configuration window opens click the Startup tab
5/ Go through the list and disable (by clicking on the box to the left of
the application) any programs you don't need to start when windows starts.
6/ Be careful what you do disable. Make sure you haven't disabled the anti
virus software or anything else that is important and needs to start when
windows starts.

You might also like to check clear cache files, such as history, temporary
internet files etc. A good free application for this is CCleaner
(www.ccleaner.com). Once you have used this restart your pc and then
defragment your hard drive.

Two other useful applications, if you don't already have them, are Ad-Aware
(www.lavasoft.com) and Spybot search and destroy (www.safer-networking.org)
Both of these will help clear out spyware and malware. These applications
are also free.

Hi..Kristal

Here is the trick
Start->Run->msconfig
then press Enter, This will bring System Configuration Utility
Now clik on Startup Tab

Now choose which program u do not want to run when windows start
rebboot ur system
Thats it...

Enjoy

Prior to going the MSConfig route, the first step is usually to go to the
program options and set it there if there is an option.

For instance, the dreaded 'RealPlayer'. If that starts with windows,
right-click it's icon in the system tray, select 'Preferences' ->
'StartCenter' -> un-check start when windows starts.

Then look in the start menu 'Startup' group, of each user name and under
'All Users'. Delete the unwanted ones.

THEN MSConfig.

First, don't confuse installed programs with programs that start
automatically when you boot. Not all installed programs do that, and there
is *no* performance issue with just having extra programs installed.

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it takes
to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is otherwise
satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most people start their
computers once a day or even less frequently. In the overall scheme of
things, even a few minutes to start up isn't very important. Personally I
power on my computer when I get up in the morning, then go get my coffee.
When I come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it took to boot
and I don't care.

However if you do want to address it, it may (but not necessarily) be
because of what programs start automatically, and you may want to stop some
of them from starting that way. On each program you don't want to start
automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not to start
(make sure you actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't
show icon" option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that
doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup
tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.
