If I have any removable drives attached, USB sticks or my 300 gig Iomega
drive, I receive an error message - wrong disk or non system disk when
booting up so I have to remove / turn off attached drives and reboot and
then reinsert / turn on drives. Is this normal, are there any work around?.

Check the boot order settings on your BIOS and adjust same to your
requirements.

Yes it's normal. The same thing will happen if you stick in a floppy disk
too. As Frazer said, check the BIOS.
