Startup problem

Each time I have started up recently, Windows Explorer opens in C:\Program
Files\Common\Bin with 4 files within the folder entitled iviaudio.ax,
iviaudioeff.ax, ivinav.ax and ivivideo.ax.
I have checked msconfig/start... nothing unusual there.
The Microsoft Support solution to Windows Explorer opening at startup is
irrelevant.
Nothing unusual in Regedit under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Please does anybody have any other ideas? It's driving me insane trying to
fix it!
Many thanks, Steve

Possible answer (nothing guarantied):

In Registry Editor, check out -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

(click on the Winlogon key on the left)

In the right hand pane, check out the Data for "Userinit" -

The Data should be exactly as follows: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

(Assuming your Windows directory is C:\WINDOWS - and yes you need to include the comma)

If the Data for Userinit deviates from what is shown above, then change the Data
by double clicking on Userinit and then close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Please post back as to whether or not this resolved the issue

Anything unusual in any of these keys (if they exist)?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

Any unusual non Microsoft services in System Configuration Utility (msconfig)? -
Services tab -
and then check the box at the bottom "Hide all Microsoft Services"

Apparently the files you are seeing in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Bin
are related to playing DVD's:

ivivideo.ax (WinDVD video decoder) and iviaudio.ax (WinDVD audio decoder).

What happens if you rename
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Bin - to -
C:\Program Files\Common Files\OldBin

(I figure you can rename it back again if needed)

I checked all the keys mentioned in regedit and didn't find anything unusual.
I renamed the file Old Bin to no avail.
Nothing unusual in msconfig services.
Interestingly, I have not used WinDVD since I last formatted my laptop six
months ago so I have no idea why those files are causing a problem.
Many thanks for your help XPUSER. It is merely an irritation at the moment
and I think that I will leave it now... possibly format and start again soon.
Thanks again, Steve.
