Startup problem

I have just recently purchase a new PC (Dell) with XP. Seems to be a fine
operating system in general but I do have a problem/question concerning
startup. When the PC boots up, everything seems to be up and running but
about a couple of minutes later, Norton Antivirus loads. There doesn't seem
to be anything going on, but until it loads, I'm "dead in the water". Is
there any reason for this approx. 2 minute delay? I had the same software
(Norton System Works) on my old PC and everything loaded immediately.

Thanks,

Tommy Flynn

Never used Norton System Works but does it specifically says on its packet
that the version you've got is compatible with XP?

Try to clean boot the machine. Start > Run > msconfig, uncheck all the
check marks in the general tab and reboot the machine. If it comes up
normally then chances are there is a third party application (norton in
this case) would need to be updated/uninstalled

2 minutes is a bit long. Try start, run, msconfig and look on the
startup tab to see what-all is being loaded (norton should be there as
well). You could try turning it all off (nothing there is actually
essential) and seeing if that solves the problem.

There is always some delay - XP does a good job getting the desktop up
fast, but is still faffing around loading and initializing services, and
startup items, maybe making restore point, saving 'last known good',
possibly looking for network devices (if you happen to have a NIC, or
Firewire card) and various other things .. some of which you can turn
off, some you have to live with.

Exactly how long it should take depends on how much memory you have, how
fast your CPU is, and exactly what services and startup programs you
have chosen to load and run.
