Hi Robin,
No, it is not normal, you may have defective or badly written
software/Hardware installed on your computer and when you start the Bootup
process is interupted by this behavior of the software/Hardware.
Or your Vedio card is warning you that it is going to say goodbye (going bad).
Check first for loose Cables (i.e Power cables, Data cables, Monitor cable)
and try to make sure they are firmly fixed/fitted to the Case.
Unplug any attached Hardware to your computer and start just with the
Mouse,Keyboard in Safe Mode and in safe mode see the Event Viewer for any
Error messages and post them here.
HTH.
Please post back with more Info about your( OS,Hardware Specs, and Softwares
installed on your computer) to enable anyone would like to help to give you
the right Procedure, otherwise all you will get is a guess!.
Thank you.
Regards,
nass

What brand, model and year is the monitor?
Same thing for the video card?

later....

My computer is a fujitsu-siemens scallo 600i
2Gb processor
80gb hard drive
768 ram
radeon 9550 256 ram graphic card
lexmark p4350 all in one printer.
Win xp home edition

The radeon graphics card i put in 2 weeks ago, but this was happening before
i upgraded the card.

Robin

Are you sure that it actually switches it off?

It is normal for the screen to show the start up information (BIOS) and then go completely black before Windows starts. It may even go completely black for a brief period after the initial Windows XP screen appears and then again after you select the user.

When it does go black, the light on the front of the monitor should go from green to orange and back to green when the next screen appears.

Hi Robin,
My Guess is All in One Lexmark is doing the trouble, I had in the past a
customer complaining about Error and it was All in One printer Driver corrupt.
Try uninstall the Printer and reinstall again or go to the Manufacturer
website and download the latest Driver for your Lexmark p4350 specs driver
and install it.

Download the diagnostics tool for your HDD from * fujitsu-siemens * and
make a floppy drive to boot and diagnose/check your HDD.
We don't know the status of your AV,Anti-spywares, we presume you are (your
computer) clean from these.
As Charlie mentioned, your monitor date? did you try another monitor to see
if the Monitor is bad or not?.
It does not mean you have a new Video Card that you will not suffer from bad
Vedio Card not being displaying Right.
Is the New Card Driver installed and compatible with your OS.
Please post back with your findings.

During Boot the video card is VGA. When loading the cards driver package you
can experience a fade to black as the resolution is changed.
