I hope someone here can help.
I'm running windows 2000 pro, service pack 3. Also have
Norton and ZoneAlarm firewall. The problem I'm about to
describe never occured before last week, some days after I
downloaded all critical updates (those available as of
August 15th) with the EXCEPTION of service pack 4. A few
days later I noticed the problem.
When I turned on the computer, the desktop came up
normally, but that automatic update icon and the baloon
that accompanies it did NOT show up in the lower right
corner of the desktop. (I'm not sure if that's the systray
or the taskbar.) In any case, since I go to the update
page I never use the automatic update feature. Then I
noticed that when I clicked on any icon to bring up a
program, nothing happened. The desktop just sat there. I
would go to task manager and it revealed that nothing was
running. Thinking the problem was the automatic update,
after restarting the computer a number of times I was
finally able to bring up the control panel, which I was
unable to do previously, and shut off (properly I think)
the automatic update feature (I no longer see the icon or
the baloon)...but the problem continues.
For days now, each time I start or restart the computer, I
get to the desktop, everything loads as usual, including
ZoneAlarm and Norton, as it always has, but when I try to
click on an icon, nothing happens. When I go to Start and
try to bring up the control panel, nothing.
I've had to restart the computer as many as six times
before being able to click on an icon or bring up the
control panel....
Since most updates require restarting the computer, I'm
afraid to update now with this weirdness happening. I even
hesitate to shut off my computer. I'm NOT terribly
computer savvy but try to be a good user, but this problem
has me completely stumped and worried.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on, and what the
solution may be? I've never had anything like this happen
before, using the same programs as I've listed above.
I do a complete Norton scan each day and no viruses are at
fault. Please any help here would be really appreciated.
Thank you. jlk
