I don't know if anyone has asked this question...a couple of months ago, to
protect my computer, I entered a password for startup. I am using Windows XP
Home Edition. I enter the password I created and now many, many, many times
today, I get the screen "Invalid Password-System Halted". What can do I do
now?

make sure your caps lock is not on...

since the wrong Windows password won't halt your system...
I'm guessing you have set the BIOS password.

If that's the case all you need to do is reset the bios by using the
internal jumper

Have a look at your motherboard manual if you cannot find it.
It's usually next to the cmos battery

Thank you for your quick response. However, I tried my password in several
different ways including with the caps lock and without. If I created the
password in "User Settings" in the Control Panel, would that set my system
password? Thanx for any help.

If you set your password from within the Control Panel...
then it was not in fact a bios password.

could you be logging onto the worng profile???

Nope, there is only one profile, mine.
