Startup: long time before logon dialog gets focus

This is a question about Windows 2000 but I'm posting it here because the
Win2k group seems to have disappeared.

When I start up my computer, there is a point when the logon dialog appears
on a blue background. In the past, I could immediately start typing my
password and hit enter. Nowadays, it takes a while before the logon dialog
gets focus. At first the cursor doesn't blink and pressing keys does not
produce *** in the password field. Sometimes when I start typing before the
cursor blinks, it completely hangs and I have to do a hard reset. If I wait
for the cursor to blink (10-20 seconds) everything works fine. I tried
turning on VerboseStatus in the registry, but that didn't provide a clue.

Does anybody have a clue what's happening? Thanks.

The Windows 2000 groups (plural) have not disappeared.

The reason you're having such problems is that you are using the web
interface to read this newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

Once you have OE set up, click Tools | Newsgroups and you'll find an
appropriate newsgroup for your question
