how/where do you tell Windows XP what programs to load on startup?

the other day I installed AIM messenger, it installed all sorts of
nasty stuff, most of which I have managed to uninstall, but it still
does a nasty thing: when Windows boots up it opens Firefox (AND
resizes browser window) and loads AOL home page.. how do I prevent it
from doing this please..

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you
actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon"
option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't
work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab,
uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.

There are two small free programs that I've been using satisfactorily
for a long time, both from the same author: http://www.mlin.net/.

One is called Startup Monitor, and it runs in the background and warns
when any program tries to install something to start at bootup and gives
you the option to allow it or not. The other is Startup Control Panel,
which installs an app in Control Panel that allows for easy control over
what gets loaded at bootup.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
