I am using GlarySofts free startup manager called Quick Startup. It seems to
do a good job for what it was designed for. I check it every now and then
just to make sure there isn't something running that wasn't before. About a
month ago it showed a task enabled that I had never seen before. It's called
"DependencyCheck". Quick Start showed it as enabled but also said it was an
invalid entry and could be deleted, so I did. I checked the next day to see
if anything had changed and nothing had. A few days later I checked again and
it had returned again as an invalid entry so I deleted it again. Now it's
back again and I can't seem to find any good info about it or how to
permantley stop it, or if It's something I need. Any info or help would be
appreciated. Things like this drive me NUTS! Thanks

Doesn't your program show the path to the executable for DependencyCheck?

Or it shows no path because the entry is invalid?

Bet it has something to do with Java. Betcha.

Well like I said things like this drive me nuts. So last night I tackeled it
again. After trying several things to see if I could get it it started again
because I had deleted it, I started to wonder if it was connected to a few
games we have on this PC that my wife likes to play. I started a couple of
them and nothing happened in Startup's. Then I tried a Comcast "Games on
Demand" game and checked the Startup's again. Low and behold there it was.
Comcast is our high speed internet provider and their Games on Demand connect
to a server when you start one which starts the "DependencyCheck" in
Startup's. Hope this helps someone else in the future.
Thanks for your response.

Glad you figured it out, Schmitty. ;-)

Comcast is my ISP also. I will not allow anything of theirs on my machine.
Hell, I won't even allow their people in my house anymore. I caught one of
the savages trying to install Macromedia Flash Player on my machine. Out
the door he went. #$%#$%!!!!

Wes,

Ya gotta give me more to go on about Comcast. I would have threw him out
also. What was he thinking!!! Other than that, why won't you allow anything
from them on your machine? Is there something I should know about them?

Thanks,

Schmitty

Schmitty,

Nothing sinister. I would not allow any ISP's software on my machine.
There is absolutely no need for any of it. Comcast Toolbar, give me a
break.

Comcast techs use an online speed test that uses Flash. I have no idea why,
there are plenty of online speed tests that do not need that POS Flash
player.

www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

What really upsets me is, every time I visit...
http://www.comcast.net/home.html

This is what I see at the top of the page...

We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of Macromedia Flash to
view the full experience of Comcast.net. Do not show me this message again.

This part is actually the close [X]...
Do not show me this message again.

Trouble is that deleting cookies makes the POS come back. #$%#$%!!!!

I only ever go there to check my Screened Mail folder to see if something
legitimate may have ended up there by mistake.

I use Outlook Express for Mail and Newsgroups, so there is no other reason
to visit.

I do like their Photo of the Day though, I always look at them. Some of
those are kind of cool, of course subscribers send them in.

Searching for DependencyCheck at Comcast brought up no hits.

I have occasionally E-mailed Comcast for help, but those techs are too far
down on the food chain to know anything. And they always want you to
reinstall Windows or something equally ludicrous.

I have had some good luck with talking to live techs at Comcast's 800 & 888
numbers. Although one new tech had me chasing my tail for a couple of hours
before I called back and got a hold of one that new his stuff. Just one bad
experience with the live techs.

Wes,

Thanks for the quick reply. You sound alot like me as far as trust, security
and performance are concerned. "Give me a break" is exactly what I thought
when I recieved the email about their new toolbar in my Outlook Express. FYI,
I also searched at Comcast for "DependencyCheck" and came up empty. But I
have deleted it several times and then restarted the "On Demand Game" that my
wife plays and then checked Startup's and it returns everytime the game is
started, so I feel safe saying that is the cause. Hope you have a LARGE
weekend Wes! Thanks again! Almost forgot- Speakeasy speed test is what I use
also.

A list of potentially useful links:

From this list you may be able find out what "DependencyCheck" is. I do not
have it, but that does not mean it is not a good process to run.

I prefer 'autoruns' to check startup processes. Ir is Available here. the
author is highly regarded in the windows community. The site has many other
excellant utilities. Go here:
